In a significant update, the Maharashtra School Education and Sports Department have reinstated the no-fail policy for students in classes 5 and 8. The move revokes the earlier policy and reinstates the annual examinations for these classes, scheduled to be held in April 2024.

Changes in Policy and Exam Schedule

As per the government resolution, students in classes 5 and 8 are now required to secure a minimum of 35% marks in the annual exams to progress to the next grade. These exams are slated to take place in the second week of April 2024.

For those who fail in one or more subjects, an additional opportunity will be provided. In the Vidarbha region, supplementary exams are scheduled for the second week of June. In contrast, for the rest of the state, the compartment exams for classes 5 and 8 will occur in the first week of June.

Amendments to the Right to Education Act

This move follows an amendment to the Right to Education Act of 2009, aligned with the central government’s directives, which necessitates students repeating the same class if they fail in their class 5 or class 8 exams.

Exam Structure and Subjects

In detailing the examination structure, the Maharashtra board has outlined that the class 5 question paper for each subject will be for 50 marks, with an additional 10 marks allocated for oral examinations. Meanwhile, the class 8 exams will comprise a 60-mark question paper, with a similar allocation of 10 marks for oral exams.

For class 5, subjects covered in the exams will include three languages, mathematics, and environmental studies 1 and 2. On the other hand, class 8 students will tackle exams in three languages, mathematics, sciences, and social sciences. Schools will be responsible for setting the question papers, aided by sample questions provided to assist teachers in their preparation.

This reinstatement of the exam policy for classes 5 and 8 marks a significant shift in the evaluation process, reinstating annual exams while maintaining a minimum pass threshold. Students and educators will need to prepare accordingly for these upcoming examinations, marking a pivotal change in the educational landscape of Maharashtra.
