Google pays tribute to Indian mathematician and physicist Satyendra Nath Bose with an artistic doodle. The doodle featured Bose performing an experiment. On this day in 1924, Bose sent his quantum formulations to Albert Einstein, who termed it as a significant discovery in quantum mechanics.

Satyendra Nath Bose was born on January 1, 1894 in Kolkata. He is best known for his work on quantum mechanics in the early 1920s. He developed the foundation for Bose statistics and the theory of the Bose condensate.

Bose’s father was an accountant. He used to write an arithmetic problem for Bose. This ignited his interest in mathematics. At age 15, Bose began pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at Calcutta’s Presidency College.

He earned a Master’s in Applied Mathematics at the University of Calcutta. Google said, “Bose solidified his esteemed position in academia, by graduating top of his class for both degrees.” By the end of 1917, Bose started giving lectures on physics.

One day while teaching postgraduate students Planck’s radiation formula, he questioned the way particles were counted. Hen then began experimenting with his own theories. Bose documented his findings in a report called Planck’s Law and the Hypothesis of Light Quanta, and sent it to a prominent science journal called The Philosophical Magazine.

However, his research was rejected. He then mailed his paper to Albert Einstein. Einstein indeed recognized the significance of Bose’s discovery and applied the Indian physician’s formula to a wide range of phenomena.

Bose’s theoretical paper became one of the most important findings in quantum theory. The Indian government awarded him the second highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan, for his tremendous contribution in to physics. He was also appointed as National Professor Notably, its the highest honor in India for scholars.

Bose went served as president of many scientific institutions including the Indian Physical Society, National Institute of Science, Indian Science Congress and the Indian Statistical Institute. He was also an adviser to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Later, Bose became a Fellow of the Royal Society. Notably, any particle that conforms with his statistics today is known as a boson. Many scientific breakthroughs have come from his work including the discovery of the particle accelerator and the God particle.
