The initial order to close primary schools was withdrawn by the District Collector, following recommendations from the Air Quality Management Commission and the Pollution Control Board. District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Chairman and Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav issued the directive to resume offline classes for the primary section students.

The Gurugram District Administration had initially issued the closure order on November 6, 2023, in response to the escalating pollution levels. The move aimed to protect students from exposure to hazardous air quality, and online classes were implemented to ensure continuity in their education.

However, with pollution levels showing a temporary decrease after Diwali, the subsequent bursting of firecrackers led to a resurgence in air pollution. Despite an Air Quality Index (AQI) recording of 349 on Monday, seven times higher than the normal level, the District Magistrate has now given the green light to resume regular classes for the primary section students.

The Meteorological department has indicated that there is no immediate possibility of rain in the coming days, contributing to the ongoing pollution concerns. On Monday, the city’s sky remained shrouded in haze throughout the day, with visibility ranging between 800 meters to one kilometer due to air pollution.

This decision to reopen schools aligns with the district’s commitment to maintaining the education continuity for students while also addressing the challenges posed by environmental factors. It remains to be seen how the administration will navigate the delicate balance between ensuring the well-being of students and the imperative of regular in-person classes.
