In a significant stride towards academic reform, the University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman, Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, revealed that over two crore students from across the nation have enthusiastically registered for the UGC’s Academic Bank of Credit (ABC). This milestone comes as a testament to the success of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), which introduced the concept of ABC to foster curriculum framework flexibility and enable interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary academic mobility among students in Indian higher educational institutes (HEIs) through seamless credit transfers.
During the Western Zone Vice Chancellor’s conference at the Maharaja Sayajirao University Baroda, Gujarat, Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar emphasized the crucial role that the Academic Bank of Credits plays in implementing the NEP 2020. The ABC portal, designed to make academic transitions smoother, received accolades from Digilocker in a tweet, underlining its significance.
Prof. Kumar expressed the importance of ensuring that all students are registered on the ABC platform and encouraged HEIs to upload all student credentials and credit certificates. UGC, over the last couple of years, has introduced a series of reforms to enhance the educational landscape, and the remarkable two crore student registrations on the ABC platform highlight the positive reception of these changes.
The ABC portal is a digital repository that houses the credit records of each student. Introduced as a pivotal component of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), ABC empowers students to access their academic scores effortlessly and facilitates a seamless transition from one institution to another, be it from a university to a college or between educational establishments. In a recent development, a unique ABC ID has been made mandatory for all students seeking admission to universities across India starting in 2023.
This incredible achievement demonstrates the progressive spirit of Indian education, making academic mobility and credit transfers more accessible than ever. The Academic Bank of Credits is set to play a transformative role in the country’s education system, benefitting students, institutions, and the nation as a whole.
