Although she was hot-blooded and semi-barbaric, she had a heart which could feel pain and suffering.

Question 5.

Her soul burned in agony at the sight of her lover rushing to the lady with whom he was to be married the next moment. Her tears had no meanings as they lost in the joy of marriage. She was left to live through misery of the procession, the happy couple and the shouts of the crowd.

Her dramatic love affair revealed to her father who put the young man to prison without hesitation. So their love affair was dramatic —too dramatic.

How could the princess find the secret of the doors?

She did find out the secret of the door for the occasion. Finally she was able to know the room in which stood the hungry tiger and in which waited the lady. It was the reason why she was impatient to make her presence on the day of trial.

Answer.
The king’s method of dealing with justice was the public arena. The humans and beasts used to perform before the audience in this arena. It was a very big amphitheater with encircling galleries, mysterious vaults and unknown passages. It was the place where king’s poetic justice was often delivered. It was also the place where crime was punished or virtue was rewarded. However, punishment or reward was absolutely dependent on the fate of the accused.

Question 9.
What do you think came out of opened door-the lady or the tiger? Give reasons.
Answer.
It is very difficult to give answers to this question. Everything depends on our thought as the author has left the end of this story hanging in the air. After the princess lover was put into the prison, he had spent several sleepless nights. She was horrified to imagine her lover being killed by the tiger. At the same time her heart was in anxiety to imagine her lover rushing towards the lady. It is a fact that she had already lost her lover. But she had desire to save him. As she had sufficient power and influence to know the secrets of the door, she did it. She was also present on the day of trial so that she could help her lover. Consequently she made a sign to the door on the right side, from which the lady might have come out.

Question 10.
What deeper message has been communicated to us in the story?
Answer.
Undoubtedly this story has a lot to say. The importance of choice and the consequences that result from this choice depends on the fate of the accused. The king has created the public arena with a purpose. He never interferes into the choice of the accused. Actually the accused’s choice is the one which decides his destiny. The king’s choice does not matter in this scheme of dealing with justice. Whether the accused is killed by a hungry tiger or get married with a beautiful maiden is a subject of fate for the accused. So fate plays a major role in one life.

Answer.
There is a single integrated judicial system in India. It is organized on pyramidal form. At the apex of the entire judicial system stands the Supreme Court of India. Immediately below the Supreme Court are the various High Courts and below them are the subordinate courts in each state.

The Supreme Court of India is the protector of the fundamental rights of citizens. It may issue writs in the nature of mandamus prohibition, habeas corpus, certiorari, and quo warrantor for the enforcement of the rights and liberties of the people.

The Supreme Court is the interpreter and guardian of the constitution of India. It can annual the unconstitutional laws and orders of the Union, and the State Governments.Every High Court enjoys original jurisdiction with respect to revenue and its collection, cases of succession, divorce etc. In its appellate Jurisdiction it hears appeals from the lower courts in cases concerning sales-tax, income tax, copy right, patent-right etc. The High Court is a court of record and its proceedings and decisions are referred to in future cases. A High court can issue writs for the enforcement of fundamental rights or for any other such purpose.

The subordinate courts are under the complete control of the High court. The lower court (e.g. Nyaya Panchayat or Munsiffs court) deals with minor cases while the higher courts (e.g., subordinate Judge’s court or District Judge’s court) deal with important cases.

Question 2.
Write a paragraph in about 100 words on importance of the rule of law.
Answer.
There are laws laid down by government, and everyone in the country has to obey them. It is something more complex, and involves the primacy of laws over the human instinct for a shortcut. It is about suppressing the urge to gain an unfair advantage, for the eventual betterment of all who reside in any one country. Those nations where the rule of law is weak tend to end up in a morass of lawlessness and corruption. Every country must guard against any creeping erosion of the primacy of prudent laws or build up new sinews to defend them.

Well-thought-out and prudent laws are the foundation of a nation. They define the parameters of civil society. Conversely, if laws become elastic, then the boundaries of life become distended into dysfunction. For this reason, then, it is incumbent on all to guard against the possible encroachment of the far-too-natural urge to cut corners.

Answer.
The lady behind the door was one of the most beautiful ladies in the entire country. She knew this fact. When she thought his lover being living with this lady, she was full of anger. She hated the lady. In her father’s system of justice, if the accused was innocent, he had to be married with the lady behind the door. As the young man loved her deeply, it was impossible to see him with the other beautiful lady.

Question 8. What did the princess feel in her dreams?
Answer.
The princess was frightened by her dreams. The horror of the dream made her restless. She was unable to bear the scene of her lover being killed by a hungry tiger. In her dreams she often covered her face with her hands. She was well aware that in her father’s method of justice only fate of the accused decided death or reward as punishment for him. There was no escape for her lover. As she was scared, she tried to escape the cruelty by covering her face.

Question 9.
Why was the princess impatient to attend the trial?
Answer.
The princess knew that her lover might ask for some hints about the doors. She had power, influence and gold to know about the secret of the doors. Her lover was well aware that she would discover it and pass on to him. Besides, she also thought that she would be asked for the secret of the door by her lover in the arena. In her father method of justice there was no provision of escape. It was a choice between death and reward. So, she was impatient to attend the trial.

Question 10.
How was the king’s justice fair?
Answer.
In the king’s method of justice crime was decided by the two doors-the tiger or the lady behind them each. The tiger punished the accused and the lady rewarded him. Everything was dependent on the chance or fate. The tiger or the lady did come out of the same door every time. Nobody was sure what would happen at the next moment. Still people were happy because justice was done instantly.

Question 11.
What arrangements did the king make for the young man’s trial?
Answer.
For the young man’s trial the king chose the fiercest tiger. He himself selected a lady for the young man.She was one of the most beautiful ladies in the entire country. Even the princess was jealous for her. All the proceedings were controlled by him. The mourners were posted outside the arena. The priests were also ready behind the door. Even facts of the matter did not produce any effect on his arrangements.

Question 12.
How was the princess’ love with the young man dramatic?
Answer.
The love affair between the princess and the young man remained a secret for some months. Unfortunately this matter was revealed to her father who put him in the jail instantly. Although her lover was below her status.he was brave, young and handsome. He loved her deeply. On the day of trial the audience were surprised to see her lover. They thought that the princess was bound to fall in love with him. But how it happened was difficult to say. Perhaps her love was dramatic.
